VISENPACK / PACKAGING GUIDE
Stretch Film Roll Weight: Net Film, Core and Gross Weight
“A 3 kg roll” is incomplete information unless the weight basis is stated. When buying stretch film, separate the weight of the usable film from the paper core and any outer packing.
Use three clear descriptions
- Net film weight: the film material alone, excluding its core and packaging.
- Core weight: the paper or other core on which the film is wound.
- Total roll weight, including core: the film plus its core, before any outer carton or pallet packing.
For a packed shipment, ask the supplier to state net and gross shipment weights separately. In a quotation or packing list, check the stated definition rather than assuming that every supplier uses the word “gross” in the same way.
A simple example
If a roll including its core weighs 3.00 kg and the empty core weighs 0.30 kg, the net film weight is 2.70 kg. This is a calculation example, not a VISENPACK product specification.
Net film weight = total roll weight including core − empty core weight.
Keep the measurement method consistent. Cartons, handles, labels or other packing items should be identified separately when they affect the figure you are comparing.
Why price per roll can be misleading
Two rolls with the same total roll weight can contain different amounts of film if their cores have different weights. Compare net film weight alongside width, thickness, length and the quoted price basis. Do not use weight alone to judge wrapping performance.
What to include in your inquiry
- Product format: hand, machine, mini, colored or jumbo film.
- Required net film weight or length per roll.
- Core internal diameter, core length and any core-weight requirement.
- Film width, thickness, color and quantity.
- Whether the quoted weight includes a handle, carton or pallet.

What does stretch film roll weight include?
Ask whether the stated stretch film roll weight means net film weight or the combined weight of film and core. Cartons, wrapping and pallets add further packaging weight. Net film weight equals the combined film-and-core weight minus the empty core weight; subtract packaging separately if it was included in the measurement.
How can I compare prices per kg of net film?
Divide the quoted film charge by the total net film weight supplied. Use the same currency and treatment of freight and taxes for each quotation. Compare matching specifications, and request separate figures for net film, core and packaging weight.
