Hand vs Machine Stretch Film: Which Should You Choose?
The first question when buying stretch film is how it will be applied. A roll for an operator and a roll for a pallet wrapper need different handling and equipment checks, even when both are made from LLDPE.
Start with the wrapping method
Hand stretch film is applied manually, with a compatible dispenser or a suitable roll format. It can be a practical option for packing stations, occasional pallet preparation and work that takes place in different areas of a warehouse.
Machine stretch film is intended for a stretch-wrapping machine. Before ordering, check the equipment model, permitted film width, core size, maximum roll diameter and roll weight. If the machine uses pre-stretch, include its operating setting in your inquiry.
Compare the complete wrapping process
| Check | Hand wrapping | Machine wrapping |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Operator applies and controls the film | Wrapper applies film using its configured settings |
| Roll fit | Handling weight, core and dispenser fit | Machine carriage, core, diameter and weight limits |
| Before approval | Trial with the actual operator and load | Trial with the actual machine and load |
Thickness alone does not describe a finished wrap. Film tension, the wrapping pattern and the number of layers also affect how a pallet is held together. Check the wrapped load in your own operation before approving a new specification.
